HIKE: 10K South Trail to the Crest (Tuesday, June 09, 2026)

The 10K Trail weaves around its eponymous altitude, somewhat under two miles high. Our Humanists New Mexico Hiking Special Interest Group adventure will explore the lower, southern section, a nice forested trail with meadowed stretches that leads to the crest of the Sandia Mountains.

Distance: 5 miles. Gain: 1000 feet.

Our hike will begin at an official trailhead, near mile marker 11 on the Crest Highway. Right now, this is where the road is closed due to US Forest Service fuel clearing and remedial work nearer the Crest. (Weekday parking is usually available to the north, comfort station too). The trail is mostly shaded and starts across the road, going left and downhill, junction to the Challenge Trail to the right. Challenge and 10K are coincident here, the same route continuing southeast to a junction with the Double Eagle Trail where we’ll take the left. At the next intersection the 10K goes its own way to the right.

Our path then proceeds to roll along a sometimes forested, sometimes meadowed route that crosses 9 ski paths that vary in width from 50 to 300 feet, before resuming a forest route that at nearly 2-1/2 miles joins the Tree Spring Trail coming up from the left. We’ll go right another tenth of a mile to the Crest. We’ll stop here, relax, refuel and then retrace our route down slope back to the trailhead. Our hike’s climb of 1000 feet will be rewarded by spectacular views to the west of the Sandias and Albuquerque. Expect seasonal wildflowers. Possible viewable animal life ranges from Abert’s squirrels (common) to bears (rare).

MEETING PLACE AND CARPOOL: Let’s meet at Smith’s Tramway and Central in the SW corner of the parking lot and travel together. The trailhead parking does need a pass, so bring your America the Beautiful card for your driver to display.

Please keep cell phones silenced during our hike.

NOTE: Hiking involves risks. You need to be sufficiently fit and properly equipped with poles, hiking boots, sun-protective clothing, water, nutrition and sunscreen. You are responsible for your own safety.

CANCEL: The promise of rain or adverse weather and road conditions will cancel this event.

IMPORTANT: If you sign up, please remember that the leader has you on a list and you have a responsibility to keep him informed of your plans so as not to cause delays and confusion on the day of the hike if you don’t join us at the meeting place. This can be done by text or call to his phone or comments on the Meetup posting.

Codenames is a fun 2-team word game that's a bit like Password but much more interesting and enjoyable for both the game itself as well as socializing with teammates. Years ago I used to play the table-top version but playing online is much better!
You can play using your computer or your phone.

Dorothy Bracey will help us explore using Humanist principles in making decisions that affect our lives. Actions that require a choice between a clear good and evil should be easy. But many of the situations that confront us are not all that simple. Can Humanist values help us to decide how to act when forced to choose one among several goods or several evils? Let’s look at some hypothetical situations and see if Humanism can help us deal with them.

Dorothy Bracey is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and Criminal Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Her work has focused on the ways in which various cultures deal with these questions

Freethinkers Forum meets the second Sunday of every month from noon - 1:30 pm in a hybrid format, in person at UU Santa Fe on the corner of Barcelona and Galisteo, and via zoom. This R-rated cult classic from Mike Judge, the creator of Beavis and Butt-head, co-creator of King of the Hill, and director/writer of Office Space, will use up less than 90 minutes of your life. Religion and politics are okay if pertinent, objective and limited.
An academic perspective, if you have one, is always welcome.

We'll grab a table either inside or on the patio. Order a meal if you like. They have good Irish food.

HIKE: Oso Grande Constitutional Walk for Hikers (Sunday, June 21, 2026)

Oso Grande, Ursa Major, Grande Ours – it all means the same thing! A Big Bear. In this case a big walk up Bear Canyon.

Our walk will begin at El Oso Grande Park, just east of the intersection of Morris and Osuna. We’ll proceed up the south side of the park, safely cross Juan Tabo, ascend a ramp road and enter the extended canyon. The adventure will go out to near the Mama Bear and Cubs statues and turn around. The total distance will be about 3-1/2 miles with about a 300-foot gain over the course of the walk. We’ll move at a constitutional pace of about 1-1/2 to 2+ miles per hour, finishing in about 2 hours. Most of the walk is in the arroyo dirt along social paths. This is a great opportunity to work the balance muscles needed for hiking while ascending a mild grade.

If desired at the time by the group, we can extend the walk to the Emery Trailhead and make it about 5 miles.

MEETING PLACE: at Oso Grande Park, south side east of Morris. Look for my red Nissan Frontier pickup in the parking lot.

HIKE: Sandia Mountains (Tuesday, June 23, 2026)

We'll be hiking in the Sandia Mountains, meeting at Capulin Snow Play Site. This site is about 9 miles up from the traffic circle, heading up the mountain. The snow play area parking lot is now fully open, so once you enter the picnic area, just drive all the way to the back.
